About Joel Wilkinson, LMSW, CAADC

In my occupation as a social worker and therapist, I am passionate about seeing individuals step into living a healthy, whole life and finding the abundant life Jesus promises in John 10:10. My experiences in life have prepared me to work with individuals as an empathetic listener. I strive to deliver individualized, high quality, evidence based treatment. My treatment approach is personal and integrative, in that I may integrate complementary interventions in thoughtful and intentional ways to help you make sustainable changes that will help you reach your goals.

My therapeutic approach often includes, but is not limited to, principles of CBT, ACT, REBT, 12-step model, motivational interviewing. I also use faith based interventions for those who desire this to be a focus of treatment. While I am passionate about working with and connecting clients to, and integrating their spirituality and faith into their recovery, I do recognize and support their right to decline this aspect in counseling.

Though I have broad clinical interests, I have extensive experience in the areas of life guidance, addiction and recovery, depression, anxiety, adolescent development, abuse and neglect, suicide prevention and intervention, grief and loss, spiritual crisis and exploration, adjustment disorder, trauma, healthy relationship skills, and family recovery dynamics.

Through our work together, I hope to help you live a more fulfilling, values-consistent life. I look forward to collaborating with you and I value your willingness to share and participate in the therapeutic process.

Joel's Story

I have been blessed with quite a variety of experiences in my life, from working landscaping and pastoral ministry to living in a small village on the Yukon River in Alaska, and now navigating fatherhood. Throughout my whole life a theme that has been consistent is the value of relationships, experiences, and joy in the journey of life. I believe knowing Christ is the ultimate example of living relationally. I come nowhere close to the example He set out for us, but I am passionate about following His lead. In living relationally I have been able to see not just individuals, but whole communities take steps toward becoming healthy and whole.

More recently I have a realization of my passion and purpose to be more directly involved with equipping young men and women to serve in an increasingly non-Christian world. Whether mentoring or counseling to help call out and recognize the truth of a deeper more spiritual life, this one essential role I hope to develop in my practice.

My family and I live in West Michigan where we love to get outside and enjoy its beauty. I love to camp and hike, and I am excited to share that with my children as they get older. I enjoy fitness and learning the value of well-rounded health, in diet, exercise, emotional and spiritual practice. It has surely improved my ability to thrive in an ever changing world. I have a wonderful wife, 2 children, and a dog named Boomer.
