About Dr. Marc Houck, PsyD

Greetings and thank you for searching our site!  I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and for over 20 years I’ve been passionate about coming alongside people as they work through life’s challenges and move toward wellness.  People come to me for a variety of life concerns, including depression and anxiety symptoms, life transition issues, & healing from trauma.  Still others enter therapy for coaching on ways to improve health & wellness practices such as sleep, diet, & exercise. In any case, I love partnering with my clients to help them accomplish their treatment goals.

My Practice:
I maintain a part-time psychotherapy and assessment practice where I see mostly individual adults.  You may also hear this referred to as counseling or therapy.   Most people I see are normal folks who feel stuck or overwhelmed or who are looking for more meaning and value in life.  Good therapy requires a safe, collaborative relationship; clearly defined treatment goals; and an openness to look at (and possibly change) one’s thoughts, actions, or relationships.  Clients can expect me to be an active, caring, and engaging partner in the change process.  While there are no guarantees, research shows that psychotherapy is generally effective in helping people improve their well-being.

My Experience & Training:
I attended Calvin College and Rosemead School of Psychology, Biola University (APA).  I am currently a Supervisory Psychologist/Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, where I lead a team and see patients in a primary medical care setting.  My experience includes work in hospital settings, outpatient clinics, college classrooms, and with the U.S. Army in Kuwait and Iraq.  I have held a variety of clinical, supervisory, and teaching positions and have training in many evidence-based treatments, including:  Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Problem Solving Training, Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, Brief Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Prolonged Exposure Therapy for trauma-Primary Care.

Marc's Story

I’ve been shaped by many life experiences, from time with family and friends to various professional roles and “big” life events.   My nearly 5 1/2 years with the U.S. Army, including a year deployed at war in Iraq, also gave me some new perspectives on life.  When not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, two teenagers, and our two dogs.  I love to travel and enjoy both personal fitness and sports.  Good music adds beauty to life, and I believe the old saying that laughter is good medicine.  My Christian faith has always been a guiding, important part of my life.  In therapy, though, I defer to my clients as to whether or not they want to bring spiritual issues into our discussions.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to set up an initial consultation appointment.  I will typically accept the following insurance plans:  Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Priority Health, Meridian, ASR, & Medicare. We will also bill other insurances “out of network” if desired.  Some people choose the benefit paying out of pocket.  While it is certainly an expense, it is also an investment in your health and well-being and is more private than using your insurance.  In such cases, I am able to discuss with you a sliding scale fee.
